3 April 2009 - 19 April 2010

Low Parks Museum, Hamilton

Thistle-banded Goblets presented by Officers from the 26th Regiment / 1st Battalion

We are delighted to present an exhibition of 'Precious' items from the Regimental collection of The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). Over 70 items are on display, many of which have never been seen in Low Parks Museum before and some of which have only recently been returned to the Museum after being on loan for over 40 years.

The exhibition is structured around the themes of Competition, Presentation and Celebration. It tells the story of the Regimental silver, from its use as part of regimental life to the difficult financial decisions which had to be made to support the running of the Regimental Museum.

Some of the highlights of the display are:

  • Model of a Junk (ship) in silver, presented to the Band of the 1st Battalion by the Naval and Military YMCA of Hong Kong in 1927
  • Gold Freedom Box presented to General Sir Thomas Graham (Lord Lynedoch) by the City of Edinburgh in 1813
  • Thistle-banded silver goblets from a set presented to the 26th Regiment / 1st Battalion by its Officers from the 1860s onwards
  • Noel Moir Tod Snuff Box, engraved to the Lieutenant who fell leading a Forlorn Hope at Wagon Hill, Ladysmith on 6th January 1900
  • Silver Bugle presented by Bandmaster Leslie Seymour to mark heavy losses in the 2nd Battalion at Neuve Chapelle, 1915
  • Silver 3-handled trophy presented by Sir David Richmond to the Third Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers in 1901
