SOLDIER OF THE MONTH

Major (Q.M.) Thomas Charles Taylor, M.B.E., M.M.
2nd Battalion The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)

1888 - 1957

Thomas Charles Taylor enlisted into the 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles on August 23rd, 1907, at the age of 19 years and 3 months old. Prior to joining the Army he had been a butcher, born and raised in Newcastle.

Thomas served with the 2nd Battalion throughout their time in Malta, and on the outbreak of the First World War had attained the rank of Serjeant.

Thomas remained with the 2nd Battalion throughout the War, reaching the rank of W.O. Class II by 1918. In 1916 he was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry. The 2nd Battalion’s war diary entry for September 1st 1916 notes:

L/Cpl Taylor, Malta 1912

“No 9803 SERGT T.C. TAYLOR was awarded the Military Medal for the following act of gallantry -
During operations July 1916 SERGT TAYLOR went with an officer to reconnoitre the enemys positions which was separated from our front line by 600 yds of open ground swept by machine gun & shell fire and in full view of the enemy. They were seen and fired at by hostile snipers as soon as they left our trenches & the officer was killed. This gallant N.C.O. however continued the reconnaissance to within a short distance of the enemy's line & after two hours returned with most valuable information"

After serving for four years as Regimental Serjeant Major of the 1st Battalion, Thomas was commissioned Lieutenant and Quartermaster at the end of 1927 and was once more posted to the 2nd Battalion, at that time stationed at Razmak on the North West Frontier of India.

During the Second World War, Captain and Quartermaster Taylor was with the 2nd Battalion as part of the BEF, and was mentioned in despatches in December 1940. For services rendered during the War Taylor was also awarded the M.B.E.

Major Taylor died on March 3rd 1957 while employed as part time Quartermaster of No 45 Week-end Training Centre at Garelochhead. He left behind a daughter and three sons, all the latter of which were serving officers of the Regular Army.
